Well, our minds are alive with critical and creative thinking!
We don’t know about you, but we’re still on a mission to grow through 2020! This week, local business owners gathered together to learn about different ways our brains process information, and how we can train ourselves to effectively be more creative and think more critically! Our Co-Sponsor, Sheila Miller-Nelson, taught us how.
Top Takeaways from the Mastermind
-
Creative thinking challenges us to look beyond the obvious, re-examine what’s in front of us, and make what we see better, different, or even both! Creativity requires cognitive effort, and our own memories or learned associations create a “stickiness” that is hard to push beyond.
-
The myth of “left brain vs. right brain” is busted by evidence that both hemispheres must work together to accomplish nearly all of the brain’s operations. Limiting yourself to one way of thinking stunts your creativity.
-
Sometimes you need to suppress your intuition and assumptions in order to think critically. Try to slow down, ignore when your brain jumps to conclusions, and take a little extra time to analyze and find solutions.
-
Involve others in your decision-making process. There is always another side to any situation. If you come upon a problem that seems impossible, speaking with someone (especially those who don’t think the same as you!) can help you see a different side and resolve the issue in a way you didn’t realize was possible.
-
Consider what situations in your current world you can switch around, flip upside-down, or turn inside-out. How can that way of thinking help you move past an obstacle and solve problems?
Since we learned in this meeting about the importance of using both divergent thinking (brainstorming) and convergent thinking (deductive reasoning), we want to take the opportunity to extend an invitation to join us again at Adapt & Thrive! This is a group of local business owners and managers coming together to give advice/ideas, encourage one another, and find solutions to the latest challenges. We are adapting and thriving every week!
